On March 20, 2019, in Hanoi, Vietnam Green Veterinary Joint Stock Company (Greenvet) and Miavit Company organized a technical workshop with two contents: African Swine Fever (ASF) and Applications. Nutritional solutions to improve pig productivity.
Attending the Workshop were leaders and employees of GreenVet Company; Miavit Vietnam Company; Pig farms, animal feed companies and press agencies…

Speaking at the opening of the conference, Mr. Vu Van Dien – Deputy General Director of Greenvet and Director of Greenbiovet Vietnam Company, said that in 2019, the Company and its customers faced African Swine Fever and productivity. livestock production is still low. Therefore, Greenvet organized this workshop with the purpose of accompanying, sharing, and sympathizing with livestock farmers during this difficult period, so that they can have more strength, strengthen their spirit, and feel secure in controlling the epidemic. disease, steady development in the future.

Next, Mr. Axel Jarchow – General Director of Miavit Vietnam Company introduced Miavit Company (Germany). Accordingly, Miavit is a family company specializing in pet nutrition, founded in 1962 by a veterinarian. In 1973, Miavit began exporting premix products to many countries around the world. Over the past 12 years, Miavit has grown 169%. This starts with Europe’s regulation not to use antibiotics in livestock farming and its interest in alternative products – an area where Miavit has a leading position.

Mr. Axel Jarchow also added that Miavit has invested a lot of money in product research and development and does not use transferable research products. Therefore, Miavit products meet many international standards, can be transported and preserved for long periods of time, through many different weather zones… In Vietnam, Miavit has increased production 3 times over the past few years. .

Pig breeding expert of Miavit Company (Germany) – Dr. Affons Heseker gave a presentation “Application of Miavit’s nutritional solutions to improve pig herd productivity”.

Dr. Affons compares the nutritional needs of animals to those of a car. A normal vehicle needs gasoline and oil at a moderate level, just as pets need basic nutrition such as body temperature regulation, nervous system, metabolism, and digestive organs. But when the vehicle is carrying goods or going uphill, it needs more gasoline, similarly, livestock that breeds or produces milk or meat needs more energy and nutrition.

Therefore, it is necessary to supplement food with the purpose of: Boars increasing reproductive performance; Sows give birth more, increase resistance, increase milk production; Newborn piglets are healthy and sturdy. Times when it is necessary to use nutritional supplements for pigs such as insemination, farrowing, colostrum, lactation, weaning, fattening, hot weather…
For example, nutritional supplements can be given to sows during the 5-7 days of mating period to help them get into estrus better; Increase ovulation; Increase conception rate; Reduce the number of non-breeding days; Increase the survival rate of piglets; The uniformity of newborn pigs increases. According to calculations, one day a sow does not reproduce costs 65,800 VND/sow/day.
Or during the nursing period, sows often lose weight, due to the need to mobilize protein reserves and lack of trace elements, affecting the pig’s health. Signs of micronutrient deficiency in sows include reduced fertility, long gestation, and low birth weight piglets (due to Zn deficiency). Cu deficiency causes sows to have reproductive dysfunction and embryo death. Mn deficiency causes sows to have miscarriages, premature births, “hypoestrus”, and delayed sexual development. Or lacking element J, piglets are underweight.
Dr. Alffons also emphasized that for newborn piglets, the biggest challenges that cause pigs to die in the first 3 days are being crushed by the mother (45%), weakness (30%), and small pigs accounting for 11%. Therefore, to increase the survival rate of newborn pigs, it is necessary: 1. Ensure the cage temperature (22ºC); incubation temperature 32-35ºC; 2. Make sure the piglet’s bed is dry and clean; 3. Increase colostrum nutritional absorption from >150-200g/pig. Therefore, timely nutritional and energy supplementation is the best way to ensure survival rate in newborn pigs.
According to Dr. Alffons, to meet the nutritional needs of pigs (males, sows, piglets), Miavit has launched a trio of quality products: SOS tab – Circolin – Miakick.
Specifically, in the 1 week pre- and postpartum period, Circolin helps regulate metabolism, increase milk fat, and increase the amount of antibodies in colostrum; Stimulates milk secretion, ensuring milk quantity and quality for piglets; Increase immunity, increase disease resistance of sows, limit inflammation; Prevents sow wear and tear. After mating, Circolin helps the embryo develop stably, nest well, ensuring healthy development of the post-pregnancy cycle; It is best to use Circolin during the first 30 days of pregnancy at a dose of 10g/sow/day.
SOS tabs products help restore the body quickly to ensure the next breeding cycle. Stimulates breeding through the endogenous hormone secretion mechanism; Helps with uniform breeding and deep lethargy; Increases egg ovulation, promotes egg maturation, and helps lay eggs; As for males, this product also helps increase sperm quality, prevent sperm death, loss of sperm…
Miakick product is an instant energy source for newborn pigs that helps provide quick energy for piglets to avoid hypothermia and stimulates rapid colostrum absorption. Stabilizes the intestinal microflora, helps prevent digestive disorders and early diarrhea in piglets. Enhance the immune system, increase vitality for piglets…
Also in the conference, the most anticipated and interesting content was the sharing of Dr. Kenjiro Inui – Disease Diagnosis Expert of FAO Vietnam about: “African Swine Fever – ASF”. Specifically, the contents provided by Mr. Kenjiro are as follows: History; Recent outbreaks; Characteristics of African Swine Fever; Clinical symptoms; Pathological; Differential diagnosis; Risk factors for virus transmission into pig farms; Identify ASF in the camp; Laboratory diagnostics; Strategy to deal with cholera epidemic in Vietnam.

Dr. Kenjiro Inui said that in China, African Swine Fever began in August, exploded most strongly in November 2018, and by March 2019, there were signs of cooling down after efforts. strong and determined businesses and government of this country. This is good news.

In Vietnam, ASF outbreaks mainly occur in small livestock farms. Specifically, there are 287 farms with 1-9 infected animals; 175 farms with 10-19 animals infected with ASF; Out of 100 animals, only 6 farms were infected.
Mr. Kenjiro Inui learned one thing: small farms with poor biosecurity systems are infected with diseases. Therefore, large-scale livestock farmers should remember that ensuring biosecurity and disinfection are the best and crucial measures to protect pigs during this sensitive time. Mr. Kenjiro Inui emphasized three times: Biosecurity, biosecurity and biosecurity are the best ways to prevent disease. He wants livestock farms to spread the biosecurity message to all their employees.
FAO experts also shared that in Europe or China, large farms, thanks to the application of good biosecurity measures, are rarely affected. Along with that, he added disease prevention measures at the pig farm as follows:
1, Do not feed pigs leftover food. If feeding, food must be thoroughly cooked for 20-30 minutes; 2, Change clothes and boots when entering and leaving camp (bathing); 3, Disinfect at the entrance and exit of the camp (trucks, cars, food, equipment, tools, etc.); 4, Disinfect the entrance/exit to the pig pen in the farm; 5. Use appropriate disinfectants; 6. Feed pigs food of reliable origin; 7. Buy sperm from a reliable source; 8. Strict quarantine when importing new pigs into the farm; 9. Do not come into contact with wild boars..
If the farm has cats, the cat is not a reservoir for the ASF virus but its footprints can run around the farm and spread quickly on the farm.
In addition, ASF’s resistance is very good and similar to the H5N1 virus, and note that it survives well in foods such as meat, so limit the introduction of meat sources from outside. ASF affects pigs of all ages. Classical cholera and blue ear rarely cause death in sows, but if sows die, it means we must suspect the farm is infected with ASF.
ASF is a difficult problem but also an opportunity for professional breeders. This is an opportunity to restructure the livestock industry. Small scale and predatory farming will shrink. The future and opportunities with large, professional breeders will be open.
Greenvet’s representative added that when vaccinating pigs, it is necessary to only use one injection or a few animals to vaccinate, avoid using the entire herd for one injection, it is very easy to spread ASF disease to the whole herd.
